United Nations Recognizes Aging as a Global Problem

The United Nations recently recognized the aging of the elderly as a global problem,
with India set to have 20% of its population be elderly by 2050. Most people treat all people over the age of 60 as elderly,
but this should be viewed in three groups: 60-70, 70-80, and 80+. The 80+ age group is the fastest growing population,
and from the age of 70 onwards, they need to pay more attention to their health, and the cost of care is higher than before.

Providing employment opportunities for people aged 60 and over

Therefore, the solution is to gather active 60+ year olds and give them opportunities for employment and volunteering.
In Asian culture, families used to support the elderly, but this has changed, and people prefer to live independently.
Therefore, there are many opinions that the state should establish an institutional system to support the elderly,
unlike the past, where the family was left to support the elderly.

Pensions don’t help poor seniors much

The elderly population around the world is mostly financially poor. However, pensions, which are support for the poor elderly,
do not help them much because they are limited in coverage and amount. Therefore,
central governments are making various attempts to improve the welfare of the elderly,
and private companies are making various efforts such as developing new products and services for the elderly.
